DomainBrain, my handy utility for keeping track of server and login information, has just been updated. Version 1.1 lets you duplicate existing domain entries - great for making domain templates if you find yourself repeating the same info whenever you add a new domain. It also now offers contextual menus in the domain list, and adds an expiry date and a name server field to the Registrar category. The new version allows automagic retrieval of data for those two new fields from the WHOIS database with the click of a button.

DomainBrain 1.1 is a free upgrade for registered users. If you’re not a registered user, you can use DomainBrain for free with up to four domains, or purchase a license for $14 to keep track of info for unlimited domains. Head on over to the DomainBrain website for more info or to download the app.

I’d also like to thank everyone who has tried DomainBrain and given me feedback. There have been a lot of great suggestions, and I’ve made a note of all of them. So if you don’t see a feature you were hoping for in this update, don’t despair - I’ll be working my way through many of the requests as time goes on.

hey I really like DomainBrain. Great Idea.
any possibility of a iPhone version that will sync with desktop version??. Great Idea huh

Loving this program as a simple way to keep track of all our domains, though I have noticed that with Australian addresses (.com.au, .net.au etc.) the WHOIS function loads the Name Servers fine but can’t seem to populate the expiry date field. Not a big deal, just thought I’d mention.

    Cheers.

@imageone: Definitely a great idea. I’d love to do that at some point, but I don’t have any concrete plans or timeline for it yet.

@Benno: There’s a problem with a few others as well - .pl and .ca. The issue is that I’m parsing the whois results for certain keywords, but the data comes back from the whois request formatted in many different ways depending on the type of domain. I’ll need to look at those problem TLDs and adapt the code to their specific formatting. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

(Actually, there seems to be an additional problem with .au domains - unless I’m missing something, a whois query on them doesn’t return an expiry date at all. If that’s the case, there’s not much I can do about that. :( )

  4. Benno Says:

Yep, you’re right, turns out that expiry dates for .au domains aren’t listed at all in the WHOIS database. Prrrrobably shoulda checked that out first. But hey, us Aussies might not have domain expiry dates, but we’ve got.. kangaroos.

Anyway, thanks again for a great program, and I’ll second the iPhone App comment!

    Cheers.

Nice! I will have to play with it some when I have free time.

Ahahahahaha! Free time! Now that’s funny. Giggle.

One big feature that would make me move from Domainer to Domainbrain is the ability to quick sort or find domain by expiry date. It’s not convenient to click on a domain and scroll all the way down just to get the expiry date.

I love the interface! I just wish it has some of the feature I’m looking for.

Great app, but (not a very big but, but a but all the same…) is there any chance of adding a few extra features, (already mentioned) the ability to add your own categories, ie. sometimes some of my sites have different ssh access or a CMS and wordpress and mint all on one site. At the moment I am having to pop these details in the notes section.

Also the ability to order the domains by name, I have a few sites listed in the app now and it would save a bit of time if they were ordered by name.

But (a better but…) great start and look forward to next releases…

PS. I also second the iphone sync…

  8. Anthony Says:

    Hi Jimbo,

I agree that being able to add to the available categories would be useful - it’s something that’s definitely on my list of things to look into.

As for ordering domains by name, you can drag and drop to manually reorganize the domain entries into whatever order you like. Of course, if you need to re-order your domain list frequently, this may not help much. I do have an entry in my feature request list to look into providing automatic sorting options, but it’s a low priority for the moment.

At any rate, thanks for the kind words and the feedback - I appreciate it!
